NOTES
The PGA Tour is almost done with its west coast swing, but a trip to famed Riviera is on the docket this week. It should be a great field this week with all five winners this season scheduled to compete. In fact, the entire top 10 on the money list is in the field. Phil Mickelson, a two-time winner, is on hand as is Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, who returns to the tour for the first time since a pair of top 10s in Hawaii, Hunter Mahan, Paul Casey and Luke Donald. It was Stricker who walked off with the title last year. He held a six-stroke lead entering the final round and shot a one-under 70 in the final round. Stricker won by only two, but it was enough to get him past Mickelson and up to No. 2 in the world rankings. The Champions Tour will be well represented this week. Fred Couples, who won`t be on hand to defend his title on the elder circuit, and Corey Pavin are both in the field. The two combined for four Northern Trust Open titles from 1990-1995. Riviera, also known as Hogan`s Alley, has hosted this event 48 times, including all but two years since 1973. The Northern Trust Open gave Jack Nicklaus an exemption in 1962 when he earned his first professional check. Surprisingly, this is one of the few events that Nicklaus never won and he`s not the only star without a title at this championship. Tiger Woods, who some thought might play this week, but passed, as he has every year since 2006, has 11 career starts, including two as an amateur. He never won and he`s played in this event more times without a victory than any other PGA Tour event. Golf Channel has the broadcast on Thursday and Friday, then CBS takes over on the weekend. Next week there are two PGA Tour events on tap. The first is the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, which begins Wednesday and was won last year by Ian Poulter. If you`re not lucky enough to be in the top 64 in the world, then there`s the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun. Cameron Beckman walked off with that trophy in 2010.
