Georgia State promotes Midget to DC

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Georgia State has elevated assistant football coach Anthony Midget to defensive coordinator, head coach Bill Curry announced Friday.

Midget, 34, is an original member of Georgia State's coaching staff, serving as secondary coach and special teams coordinator since 2008. He will remain as the safeties coach.

Midget replaces John Thompson, who left Georgia State two weeks ago for the defensive coordinator position at Arkansas State.

"Almost four years ago, (Virginia Tech head coach) Frank Beamer called me to recommend this young coach, and since the day he arrived Anthony has demonstrated the attitude, the skills and the work ethic to make Georgia State football what it should be," Curry said. "He has always gone the extra mile in game preparation, in recruiting and in accountability for his student- athletes.

"He is tough and very demanding. His defensive backs don't like him every day, but they love him, and that's a special quality to have."

Georgia State will continue its transition to a 4-2-5 defensive alignment under Midget, who was a four-year letterwinner (1996-99) and a three-year starter at cornerback and later a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech.

Georgia State's third-year program will join CAA Football this season.
