South Dakota inks a pair of JUCO players

Vermillion, SD (Sports Network) - New University of South Dakota head football coach Joe Glenn announced Tuesday the signing of running back Jasper Sanders and safety Dennis "D.J." Wakes of Butler Community College (Kan.) for the 2012 season.

Sanders, a native of Kansas City, Kan., earned first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors and honorable mention All-America honors this season while leading Butler (11-1) with 937 rushing yards and a team-high 15 touchdowns. He is 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds.

Wakes, a native of Topeka, Kan., earned first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors as a sophomore. The 6-foot, 187-pounder recorded 37 tackles, including 23 solo stops, with 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass break-ups and four passes defended.

South Dakota, which was 6-5 this past season as a member of the Great West Football Conference, will begin play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2012.
