Roller to step down as Samford AD

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Bob Roller announced his intention to resign as Samford University's athletic director, effective November 30.

"It has been the joy of my professional career to witness the growth of Samford athletics during the past 11 years," Roller said on Tuesday. "At this time in my life, I need to make this move solely in my best personal interests. Now that a major portion of the strategic plan for raising the profile of Samford athletics through facility improvements and conference realignment has been achieved, it is the proper time for me to take this step.

During Roller's tenure, which began in 1999, Samford football moved up from the Atlantic Sun Conference into the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003, then to the Southern Conference in 2008.

Samford women's athletics programs have won four of the last six All-Sports championships in the Ohio Valley and Southern Conferences, and Bulldogs athletics as a whole have maintained one of the highest scores in NCAA's Division I sports in its yearly Academic Performance Rate.

"Bob Roller's departure from Samford leaves a hole in my heart," said school president Andrew Westmoreland. "In addition to providing visionary and prudent leadership for athletics, he is a treasured beneficiary of this season of his career. I am grateful for his extraordinary work on behalf of our student- athletes, coaches and staff."

Under Roller's guidance, Samford's athletic landscape was changed with construction of a 6,000-seat multi-purpose arena for basketball and volleyball, a new baseball field, the Cooney Family Field house for the football program, new tennis courts and a new stadium currently under construction for track and soccer scheduled to be finished next year.
