Elon suspends standout senior
Elon, NC (Sports Network) - Elon senior defensive end Brandon Ward will not play in Saturday's game at The Citadel after the university suspended him from athletic activities following his arrest on assault charges.
Ward, 22, is facing two counts of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.
According to The Times-News of Burlington, North Carolina, the charges stem from an alleged off-campus incident that occurred early Sunday, hours after Elon returned from its victory at Chattanooga. Ward was arrested Thursday.
An Elon police report stated Ward allegedly punched Stephen Charles Lorenzo and Cory Brent Parsons, leaving the pair with facial injuries. Police said Lorenzo suffered a broken nose and damage to his jaw, and that both men had teeth broken.
The 6-foot-6, 232-pound Ward, from Webster, Florida, was an All-Southern Conference preseason selection. He had outstanding games against nationally ranked Appalachian State and Wofford recently and is fourth among Elon players with 48 tackles, including team highs with 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and seven quarterback hurries.
Elon has a 3-5 record.
