No. 9 Richmond edges No. 7 Elon in OT
Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Tyler Kirchoff's 16-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted No. 9 Richmond past No. 7 Elon, 27-21, as the Spiders returned to campus for the first time in 82 years and successfully broke in Robins Stadium on Saturday.
The Spiders (1-1) handed first-year head coach Latrell Scott his first win and beat the Phoenix (1-2) for the third straight season.
The 8,700-seat Robins Stadium underwent a $25 million renovation, bringing the Spiders back from downtown Richmond Stadium, where they had played since 1929.
Elon forced overtime on Scott Riddle's 25-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Mellette on the final play of regulation. However, Richmond blocked Adam Shreiner's 37-yard field goal to open overtime and set up the Spiders' winning score.
Riddle built on his Southern Conference all-time passing yardage record by throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Richmond controlled the game clock, with Southern California transfer Aaron Corp completing 19-of-32 passes for 207 yards and one TD.
