Wright named UC Davis' starting QB
Davis, CA (Sports Network) - UC Davis football coach Bob Biggs named redshirt freshman Randy Wright as the team's starting quarterback for its opener against Cal on Sept. 4 in Berkeley.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Wright was selected over sophomore Austin Heyworth, the Aggies' backup last season. Biggs went with Wright after evaluating Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage.
"We felt going into (Saturday) that Randy had been performing probably better overall," Biggs said. "But we wanted to have a test under fire, a real scrimmage, and he continues to play well. He belies a redshirt freshman with no experience.
"He's so calm. His presence in the pocket is very, very good,"
Wright is a 2009 graduate of Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa. He earned all-state and was the MVP of the North Bay League after leading his prep team to the California Div. III Bowl Championship game.
The Aggies finished 6-5 overall and won the Great West Conference title with a 3-1 mark last year.
