GAME NOTES: SWAC rivals Southern and Texas Southern meet in each's 2009 season finale on ESPNU's nationally televised broadcast.
Last season's meeting drew over 25,000 fans, with Southern winning the game 45-14. These two historic HBCUs have met since 1946. Southern has won 12 straight meetings.
The Jaguars are coming into the game having fallen to Grambling, 31-13 in the Bayou Classic in New Orleans. One of the nation's better offenses was limited to 232 yards, with Walter Payton Award nominated quarterback Bryant Lee (2,592 yards of total offense, 27 TDs) compiling 167 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Other standouts on Southern's offense include running back Bryan Threat (528 yards rushing, four TDs) and reliable wide receiver Juamorris Stewart (72 catches, 13.1 average, 10 TDs). Stewart, a preseason All-American, was contained with just three receptions for six yards by Grambling.
Southern ranks 56th nationally in scoring defense, 58th in total defense and features defensive tackle Jordan Miller (50 tackles, eight tackles for loss) up front. The nation's leader in interceptions, free safety Jason House (42 tackles, eight interceptions), controls the secondary.
Texas Southern is looking for its first win against the Jaguars since a 34-30 win in 1996. The Tigers are coming off of a 14-10 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, racking up 438 yards of total offense.
Quarterback Arvell Nelson (2,440 yards of total offense, 14 TDs) paces TSU's offense and is joined by running back Martin Gilbert (539 yards rushing, five TDs) and wide receiver Brian Haith (47 catches, 14.3 average, two TDs).
Texas Southern's 22nd-ranked defense features linebacker Dejuan Fulghum (79 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss) and safety Curtis Thomas (34 tackles, six interceptions).
Texas Southern has made dramatic improvement this season, but Southern should continue its streak with its solid offensive attack.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Southern 35, Texas Southern 24.
