(Saturday, September 5th)

Final Score: (25) Kansas 49, Northern Colorado 3

Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Jake Sharp rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and also added a receiving score, as No. 25 Kansas routed Northern Colorado, 49-3, in the season opener for both schools.

Todd Reesing threw for 208 yards and a pair of scores on 13-of-20 efficiency, and also rushed for 79 yards and a pair of TDs for the Jayhawks (1-0), who went 8-5 in 2008 and culminated the campaign with a victory over Minnesota in the Insight Bowl. Toben Opurum had two rushing scores, while Tertavi Ingram had a TD grab in the win. Kerry Meier led all Kansas receivers with 115 yards on five catches.

"It was not something that I expected, but when that opportunity comes around you definitely have to take advantage of it," Opurum said of his two scores.

Bryan Waggener tossed for 165 yards on 19-of-30 passing for the Bears (0-1), who won just once in 11 tries last season. Andre Harris totaled 22 yards on six carries, while Alex Thompson tallied 66 yards on five grabs.

"We always expect to score," said Waggener. "We expect to play with them and be in the game, we come out here trying to win every game and it was a disappointment not to get in the end zone, but they're a Top-25 team for a reason."

Kansas drew first blood as Reesing's one-yard touchdown run capped an opening drive that lasted 10 plays and 66 yards to give the Jayhawks a 7-0 lead with about 10 minutes left in the first.

Reesing added a 13-yard TD scramble early in the second quarter, and, following a stop on Northern Colorado's ensuing touch, Sharp hauled in a 10- yard touchdown pass to give the Jayhawks a 21-0 advantage.

Reesing hooked up with Ingram on a 16-yard scoring pass late in the second stanza to balloon Kansas' lead to 28-0 heading into the intermission.

Michael York nailed a 29-yard field goal early in the third to get the Bears on the board, 28-3.

Sharp's one-yard TD run gave Kansas a 35-3 edge with just over 14 minutes left to play.

Opurum had a 10-yard TD run late in the fourth to increase the difference to 42-3. He added a 26-yard scoring dash with under a minute left to account for the final margin.
