Rizzi named head coach at Rhode Island
Kingston, RI (Sports Network) - The University of Rhode Island named Darren Rizzi as their head football coach on Tuesday.
"We are so excited to have Darren Rizzi lead our football program," Thorr Bjorn, URI director of athletics, said. "Darren is an extremely well-respected coach, who not only possesses tremendous passion and enthusiasm for the sport of football, but even more importantly, for the University of Rhode Island. He is exactly the type of person we need to energize our football program and put us on the path of competing for a CAA Championship and beyond."
Rizzi, a 1992 graduate of URI, was an All-American tight end for the Rams and comes to the team after spending six seasons at Rutgers. This past season he served as associate head coach for the Scarlet Knights and coached the linebackers and special teams. They finished the season 7-5 and are currently preparing to play in the International Bowl against Ball State on January 6.
Rizzi replaces Tim Stowers, who was relieved of his duties last month. RI suffered through a 3-8 season this past year, marking the sixth consecutive losing season for the Rams.
