Texas Southern names Johnnie Cole new head coach
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Texas Southern University has named Johnnie Cole its new head football coach.
Cole, the head coach at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee the last three seasons, takes over for Steve Wilson, who was fired earlier this month.
The Tigers were 0-9 when Wilson was fired, and the team then lost its final two games under defensive coordinator DeChon Burns for a winless mark in 11 games.
"We needed someone who could effectively maximize our team's potential and take the TSU football program to the next level and based on his success at Lane College, we believe Johnnie Cole is that person," athletic director Alois Blackwell said.
Cole completely transformed the Lane College football program into a winner. He converted an 0-10 team in 2005 to an 8-3 mark in 2006 and a 7-3 record this year. He played quarterback at Texas Southern from 1982-85 and has the third- best career-passing mark with 4,247 yards and 33 touchdowns.
