Hodges, Henderson lead Texas Tech to rout over Sycamores
Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Cody Hodges threw three touchdown passes and Taurean Henderson ran for three scores in the first half, leading 19th-ranked Texas Tech to a 63-7 rout of Indiana State at Jones SBC Stadium.
Hodges completed 25 of his 32 attempts for 227 yards, as the Red Raiders (3-0) lit up the scoreboard for the third straight week. They notched 56 points in a win over FIU on September 10 and then piled up 80 points last weekend versus Sam Houston State.
Henderson finished with 141 yards on 10 carries, while Joel Filani caught five passes for 57 yards and two TDs in the lopsided victory. Texas Tech plays Kansas next Saturday in its Big 12 opener.
Blayne Baggett was 16-of-32 for 120 yards and a TD in the loss for Indiana State (0-4), which was meeting Texas Tech on the football field for the first time. The Sycamores, a Division I-AA team from the Gateway Football Conference, fell to 2-8 versus teams from the state of Texas.
Indiana State will aim for its first win of the season next weekend against Western Kentucky in the GFC opener.
Henderson scored three touchdowns by the second quarter and the Red Raiders had total control of the game. His three-yard TD run with 7:32 left in the first period opened the scoring and a 44-yard scamper minutes later staked Texas Tech to a 14-0 lead.
The Red Raiders grabbed a 21-0 advantage 2:14 into the second quarter thanks to Henderson's six-yard touchdown run.
Hodges then tossed three touchdown passes to push the lead to 42-0. He hooked up with Jarrett Hicks on a nine-yard toss with about nine minutes to go in the half and found Robert Johnson in the end zone from seven yards out later in the quarter. Filani then hauled in an 11-yard strike from Hodges and the Red Raiders owned a 42-0 lead with 3:28 left in the second quarter.
Texas Tech headed to the locker room with a 49-0 advantage after Brandon Douglas scored from a yard out following a blocked punt. Hodges passed for 227 yards in the first half.
Graham Harrell took over in the second half and chucked a nine-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Johnson, making it 56-0 early in the third quarter.
Indiana State finally reached the scoreboard with 4:12 left in the game on Baggett's five-yard touchdown pass to Jamie Petrowski.
Texas Tech later completed the scoring on Shannon Woods' 12-yard TD run.
Texas Tech had 70 plays for 538 yards, while the Sycamores compiled 268 yards on 71 offensive plays...Graham ended 9-of-15 for 69 yards...Petrowski finished with 44 yards on five receptions.
