Final Score: Louisiana Tech 44, New Mexico State 0
Ruston, LA (Sports Network) - Hunter Lee rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to a 44-0 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies in a Western Athletic Conference bout at Joe Aillet Stadium.
Colby Cameron threw for 217 yards and one touchdown for Louisiana Tech (8-4, 6-1 WAC), which clinched the outright regular season title for the Western Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs were tied with Nevada for the conference lead, but Nevada fell to Utah State, giving the Bulldogs the outright title.
It was the first home shutout for Louisiana Tech since the mid-1990's and the school's first WAC championship since 2001. Louisiana Tech has now earned a spot in the San Diego Poinsettia Bowl and will face either TCU or Boise State.
Travaughn Colwell had a rough game for NMSU (4-8, 2-4), as the quarterback threw for just 119 yards, and was intercepted three times and sacked seven times.
Matt Nelson put the Bulldogs on top 3-0 early in the first quarter with a 32- yard field goal. That was followed by a seven-yard touchdown pass from Cameron to Taulib Ikharo. The extra point was unsuccessful, but the Bulldogs went into the second quarter with a 9-0 lead.
The second quarter was scoreless until the final minute when Lee scored on a one-yard plunge. Just seconds later Adrien Cole picked off a pass and returned the ball 45 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 23-0 halftime lead.
Louisiana Tech continued its strong play in the third quarter, as Lee scored on a six-yard touchdown scamper early in the frame. Craig Johnson's 82-yard punt return pushed Louisiana Tech's lead to 37-0, and that advantage ballooned to 44-0 when Lee scored on a seven-yard run.
There was no scoring in the final frame, but the Bulldogs had the game well in hand, and went on to win by a convincing margin.
