Final Score: Air Force 42, New Mexico 0
Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Mike DeWitt ran for four touchdowns as the Air Force Falcons crushed the New Mexico Lobos, 42-0, in Mountain West Conference action at University Stadium.
DeWitt carried the ball 15 times for 64 yards for the Falcons (4-4, 1-3 MWC) as they generated a hefty 335 yards and six scores on the ground in the rout. Connor Dietz, who stepped in for an injured Tim Jefferson at quarterback, covered a game-high 87 yards and scored once on six carries as the academy snapped a three-game slide.
The Lobos (0-8, 0-3) were led by B.R. Holbrook who converted 17-of-27 passes for 109 yards, but he was sacked twice and had two passes picked off on the afternoon. Running backs Crusoe Gongbay and Demarcus Rogers combined to post 117 yards on 24 rushing attempts.
The first score of the game for the Falcons actually came from the defense when Austin Briehl recovered a fumble for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. Less than four minutes later DeWitt scored the first of his TDs on a four-yard run.
In the second quarter DeWitt hit the end zone on runs of 12 and three yards and Dietz streaked 39 yards through the middle of the defense as he too landed in the end zone, making the score 35-0 at the break.
Following a scoreless third quarter, DeWitt capped off an incredibly successful afternoon by capping a 17-play, 86-yard drive with a one-yard TD run. DeWitt, who gained a career-high 108 yards against Boise State the last time out, had just two TDs in his career before today's battle.
Not only are the Lobos winless so far this season, the team entered the week tied with Florida Atlantic for the longest losing streak in the nation at 10 games. New Mexico entered the week ranked 119th in the country in scoring defense, giving up 47.6 ppg and has been outscored in the last three games by a combined 160-7.
