Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - Ryan Aplin completed 20-of-32 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns as Arkansas State beat Louisiana at ASU Stadium to remain perfect in Sun Belt Conference play.
Aplin also led Arkansas State (8-2, 6-0 Sun Belt) in rushing with 70 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts. Taylor Stockemer contributed 85 receiving yards and two touchdowns on four catches as the Red Wolves won their seventh straight game. Demario Davis had a strong showing for the Arkansas State defensive unit with seven tackles and an interception.
Signal caller Blaine Gautier completed just 19-of-38 attempts for 206 yards and two touchdowns and threw three interceptions for Louisiana (8-3, 6-2). Gautier also led the Ragin' Cajuns in rushing with 53 yards on 17 attempts. Darryl Surgent grabbed two touchdown passes for Louisiana. Lance Kelley led the Ragin' Cajuns with 13 tackles. Devon Lewis-Buchanan added 11 tackles and a sack.
Arkansas State opened up scoring just over three minutes after kickoff with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Aplin to Stockemer. Aplin threw another touchdown pass to Stockemer, this time on a 31-yard scoring play, with 3:15 left in the first quarter to give the Red Wolves a 14-0 lead.
Brian Davis added three to Arkansas State's advantage just past the mid-way point of the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal.
Louisiana scored its first points with less than a minute remaining in the opening half when Gautier completed a 10-yard touchdown toss to Surgent.
Aplin quickly led Arkansas State down the field to put Davis in position for a 24-yard field goal that gave the home team a 20-7 lead at halftime.
Louisiana cut into the lead just over three minutes into the second half when Gautier completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Surgent. Alonzo Harris scored on a four-yard touchdown run for the Ragin' Cajuns at the nine minute mark of the third period to give Louisiana a 21-20 lead.
Arkansas State took back the lead when Aplin ran for a touchdown at the 1:31 mark of the third quarter. Aplin's four-yard rush put the Red Wolves up 27-21 heading into the final frame.
Brian Davis added another field goal with under three minutes remaining to put it out of reach. The 21-yard kick by Davis ended scoring with Arkansas State leading 30-21.
Arkansas State won the offensive battle by gaining 397 yards of total offense to Louisiana's 314.
The Ragin' Cajuns were hurt by turnovers as they threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in the contest.
Arkansas State is now one win away from clinching the Sun Belt Conference championship.
