Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Kedrick Rhodes rushed for 122 yards and scored a touchdown as the FIU Panthers rolled over the Florida Atlantic Owls, 41-7, in Sun Belt Conference action at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium.
Jake Medlock was 18-of-24 through the air for 135 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (6-4, 3-3 Sun Belt) who became bowl eligible with the win. T.Y. Hilton caught eight balls for 26 yards and also returned a punt 97 yards for a score.
Alfred Morris rushed for 110 yards on 21 carries for the Owls (0-9, 0-6). Graham Wilbert was 17-of-30 through the air for 164 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted three times. Marcus Cunningham caught six balls for 76 yards and a score.
Jack Griffin gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal at the 7:49 mark of the first quarter. Medlock's two-yard run with 1;40 left extended FIU's lead to 10-0.
Rhodes extended the hosts' lead with a 12-yard touchdown run at the 11:36 mark of the second quarter before Medlock connected with Willis Wright on a nine-yard scoring connection less than two minutes later.
Hilton's 97-yard punt return made it a 31-0 game with 2:58 still left in the first half. It was the third-longest play in FIU history and also the longest punt return in school history. Hilton is now the first player in FIU history to return two punts for touchdowns in a career.
The Owls got on the board when Wilbert connected with Cunningham on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 9:43 left in the third quarter.
Griffin added a 37-yard field goal with 13:44 left in the game to extend FIU's lead to 34-7.
Darriet Perry's two-yard TD run with 3:50 left in the game completed the scoring.
The Panthers reached the red zone on seven occasions and scored on six of them, coming away with four touchdowns and two field goals. They were also 6-of-12 on third down conversions.
