Toledo, OH (Sports Network) - Terrance Owens threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, as the Toledo Rockets bested the Western Michigan Broncos, 66-63, in a back-and-forth shootout from the Glass Bowl.
Adonis Thomas ran for 216 yards and two touchdowns, while Morgan Williams added a pair of rushing scores for the Rockets (6-4, 5-1 MAC), who were coming off of a 63-60 loss to Northern Illinois.
Alex Carder completed 38-of-59 passes for 548 yards and seven touchdowns -- three to Jordan White -- for the Broncos (5-5, 3-3).
White caught 16 passes for 238 yards.
Toledo, which got touchdown receptions from Jerome Jones, Bernard Reedy and Williams, compiled a Mid-American Conference season-high 804 yards of total offense.
Carder hit Robert Arnheim for an eight-yard touchdown on the Rockets' opening drive of the second half, but Western Michigan answered with an 80-yard touchdown drive, capped by Thomas' one-yard scoring plunge for a 35-35 tie.
Toledo then appeared to grab a decisive advantage, countering a pair of Western Michigan punts with David Fluellen's two-yard scoring run and Reedy's 42-yard touchdown grab for a 49-35 lead.
But the Broncos rallied once again, as White broke a pair of tackles en route to a 60-yard touchdown reception and Carder's one-yard sneak on 2nd-and- goal tied the game with 13:22 remaining.
Williams' three-yard touchdown plunge put the Rockets on top on their next possession.
The teams then traded turnovers before a Broncos punt.
Thomas capitalized on the defensive stand with a 42-yard touchdown run for a 63-49 Toledo lead with 5:21 remaining.
On their next drive, the Broncos made it a 63-56 game on Chleb Ravenell's eight-yard touchdown grab.
Western Michigan then held Toledo out of the end zone, but Jeremiah Detmer's 39-yard field goal put the Rockets on top, 66-56, with 1:51 left.
Carder marched the Broncos down the field with haste, hitting Eric Monette for a 34-yard completion before finding White for a nine-yard score with 1:01 remaining.
The ensuing onsides kick sailed out of bounds, however, and the Rockets were able to run out the clock.
Surprisingly, both teams punted on their first possession of this back-and- forth shootout.
Western Michigan's punt was fumbled by the Rockets' Eric Page, and Carder capitalized with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Clark Mussman for a 7-0 lead.
The Broncos grabbed on 14-0 lead on their next drive, as White caught a pass in the flat, stiff-armed a defender and bulled his way into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown.
The Rockets, though, reeled off 21 unanswered points to grab the lead.
Owens hit Jones for a 23-yard touchdown on the team's next drive, then capitalized on a Western Michigan fumble with a 40-yard scoring strike to Thomas.
The Broncos fumbled again on the their next drive and Dan Molls returned the loose ball 24 yards for a touchdown and a 21-14 Toledo lead after one quarter.
Toledo turned the ball over early in the second, as Page fumbled, but the woes continued for Western Michigan, as Carder fumbled on the goal line to squander a scoring opportunity.
The Rockets, though, gave the ball back three plays later, as Owens was intercepted by Doug Wiggins, whose 20-yard touchdown return tied the game at 21.
Austin Dantin was intercepted by Demetrius Pettway on Toledo's next possession and Carder hit Josh Schaffer for a 64-yard touchdown strike several plays later.
Williams responded, though, finding the end zone with a 24-yard run to make it a 28-28 game at the half.
