Final Score: Toledo 45, Ball State 28

Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Terrance Owens tossed four touchdown passes and threw for 267 yards and Adonis Thomas added a score with 141 yards on the ground as the Toledo Rockets defeated the Ball State Cardinals, 45-28, in a Mid-American Conference game at Scheumann Stadium.

Toledo (8-4, 7-1 MAC) won three straight to end the regular season, but any chance to make the conference title game was dashed just as the game began.

Northern Illinois defeated Eastern Michigan 18-12 to earn a berth in the championship contest. The Rockets' lone MAC loss came against the Huskies, 63-60.

Owens completed 27-of-32 passes with Eric Page hauling in 16 for 145 yards and a touchdown to power the Rockets. Morgan Williams added 61 yards on the ground on 15 carries. Owens started at quarterback because Austin Dantin was out with a concussion.

The Rockets took the opening kick and went on a 15-play drive of 80 yards to establish a lead on Thomas' four-yard score with 8:31 left in the quarter.

Toledo made the score 14-0 early in the second quarter when Owens hooked up with Williams for an 11-yard TD.

The Cardinals (6-6, 4-4) got on the board when Jahwan Edwards scored from one yard out with 8:57 left until halftime. The Rockets opened their advantage to 21-7 with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter on Bernard Reedy's 30-yard scoring catch.

The Rockets registered the lone third quarter score with a three-yard connection from Owens to Cassius McDowell to make it 28-7 with 9:09 left in the frame.

The fourth quarter had the teams exchange scores as Ball State worked hard to close the gap.

The Cardinals made the score 28-14 with 14:25 left on a five-yard pass from Keith Wenning to Zane Fakes. Toledo came right back with a another scoring strike from Owens to Page for 14 yards.

Ball State replied with a four-yard TD run by Dwayne Donigan to put the Cardinals within 14 points with 10:21 remaining.

However, The Rockets responded with a 35-yard field goal by Ryan Casano and Jermaine Robinson intercepted Wenning for Toledo's final TD with 2:35 left.

The scoring concluded on a 10-yard TD pass from Wenning to Torieal Gibson for the Cardinals with 50 seconds remaining.

Wenning completed 36-of-52 passes for 308 yards. Jack Tomlinson and Briggs Orsbon each caught nine of those throws for 97 and 96 yards, respectively. Jamil Smith added eight catches for 57 yards and Gibson finished with 41 yards on five receptions. Edwards led the Cardinals rushing attack with 60 yards on 13 carries.

The Rockets have now taken a 19-17-1 edge over Ball State in the all-time series because Toledo has won the last three matchups against the Cardinals.
