(Saturday, November 19th)

Final Score: BYU 42, New Mexico State 7

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Jake Heaps threw for 238 yards and four touchdowns as the BYU Cougars crushed the New Mexico State Aggies, 42-7, in non-conference action at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Heaps converted 21-of-36 passes and was guilty of one interception for the Cougars (8-3) as they won their second in a row and the seventh in the last eight outings. Ross Apo grabbed five passes for 66 yards and a couple of scores, while Bryan Kariya gained 27 yards and scored once on seven rushing attempts.

The Aggies were led by Matt Christian who connected on 12-of-23 passes for 98 yards and a score, the team losing for the fourth time in the last five outings unfortunately.

Kariya scored the only points of the first quarter on a four-yard run for the hosts, capping a 12-play, 52-yard drive that ate up close to five minutes on the clock.

In the second frame NMSU tied the scored at 7-7 when Christian hooked up with Austin Franklin on a three-yard TD pass play, but from there the game belonged to BYU as it rattled off 35 unanswered points.

Before the first half could draw to a close, Apo registered touchdown catches of 20 and nine yards, giving the Cougars a 21-7 advantage at the break.

In the third, Matt Marshall crossed the goal line from two yards out and Heaps combined with Matt Edwards on a nine-yard TD pass to boost the lead to 35-7.

JD Falslev capped the night's scoring with a 27-yard TD reception from Heaps midway through the fourth quarter to seal the win.

New Mexico State's offense was limited to a mere 249 yards which fell far short of the team's average of 425.0 ypg heading into the weekend.

Even before picking up the win tonight, the Cougars accepted a bid to play in the 2011 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl which will be held at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas on Friday, December 30, 2011 against an opponent from Conference USA still to be determined.
