Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Austin Davis passed for 266 yards and one touchdown to lead Southern Miss to a 27-3 win over SMU in Conference USA action at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Jamal Woodyard added 166 yards rushing and one touchdown for Southern Miss (6-1,2-1 C-USA), which also got a big day from receiver Kelvin Bolden, who caught nine passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Zach Line led SMU (5-2,3-1) with 163 yards on 22 carries. J.J. McDermott completed 16-of-32 for 173 yards and two interceptions, with both coming in the fourth quarter.
Southern Miss cashed in on its first drive of the game, as Danny Hrapmann hit a 27-yard field goal to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Davis made it 10-0 midway through the first quarter, hitting Bolden for a 13- yard touchdown pass.
SMU got on the board with a 19-yard field goal at the 7:57 mark of the second quarter, which capped an 11-play, 82-yard drive that ate up over six minutes of clock.
Hrapmann's second field goal of the day, this time a 24-yarder, made it 13-3 with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. Southern Miss pulled away in the fourth quarter, courtesy of two big plays from opposite sides of the ball.
Woodyard rushed for a 55-yard touchdown with 7:30 remaining to make it 20-3. On the next possession, McDermott was intercepted by Marquese Wheaton, who returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to put the final touches on the win.
Southern Miss has now won five consecutive games. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Mustangs.
