Final Score: Southern Mississippi 44, Memphis 7
Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Austin Davis threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to a 44-7 victory over the Memphis Tigers in a Conference-USA bout at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Tracy Lampley hauled in one of those touchdowns for Southern Mississippi (10-2, 6-2 C-USA) and finished with 116 yards on five receptions. The Golden Eagles also racked up 255 rushing yards and the majority of damage was done by Desmond Johnson, who finished with 103 yards, while the lone score on the ground came from Davis.
With the win the Golden Eagles claim their first Conference-USA Eastern Division title since 2006 and finish the regular season with 10 victories for the first time since 1988. Southern Mississippi's prize for winning the division is a meeting with the eighth-ranked Houston Cougars in the league title game.
Andy Summerlin had a rough game for Memphis (2-10, 1-7), as he completed just 21-of-45 passes for only 174 yards and was intercepted twice.
The Golden Eagles dominated this game from start to finish and got on the scoreboard midway through the opening frame when Davis hit Ryan Balentine with a 41-yard scoring strike.
Danny Hrapmann drilled a 23 yard field goal late in the first quarter and added a 35-yard boot early in the second stanza to give the Golden Eagles a 13-0 edge.
Less than two minutes after the second field goal Davis extended Southern Mississippi's lead to 24-0 with a 49-yard scoring strike to Lampley.
Davis added an 18-yard touchdown run later in the frame and the half was closed out with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown by Deron Wilson.
The Golden Eagles continued their outstanding play in the third quarter, as Hrapmann's 27-yard field goal pushed Southern Mississippi's lead to 37-0.
It was 44-0 later in the quarter after Kendrick Presley picked off a pass deep in Southern Mississippi's territory and return the interception 100 yards for a score.
The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard late in the final frame, but it was because of a fumble recovery by Mitch Huelsing in the end zone. However, the Tigers were not able to fight back, as the Golden Eagles cruised to the win.
