NCAA Game Summary - Marshall at Memphis

Final Score: Marshall 23, Memphis 22

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Tron Martinez rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown to lead the Marshall Thundering Herd to a 23-22 decision over the Memphis Tigers in Conference-USA action at the Liberty Bowl.

Travon Van scored the game-winning touchdown for Marshall (5-6, 4-3 C-USA) and finished the matchup with 55 yards on the ground. Rakeem Cato overcame two interceptions by throwing for 150 yards and one touchdown.

Andy Summerlin and Taylor Reed both saw time under center for Memphis (2-9,1-6), as Summerlin threw for 129 yards, and Reed finished with 109 yards. Billy Foster scored the only offensive touchdown for Memphis, which also received two defensive scores in the setback.

Less than two minutes into the contest the Herd were on top 7-0, thanks to a 44-yard touchdown pass from Cato to Antavious Wilson.

Memphis evened the score midway through the first quarter when Foster scored on a one-yard run.

Just seconds into the second stanza the defense for Memphis put the Tigers ahead, as Kendrick Golden returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown. However, the extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 13-7 in favor of Memphis.

Marshall added a 20-yard field goal by Tyler Warner and went into the break down 13-10.

The only points posted in the third quarter came off the foot of Paulo Henriques, as the kicker drilled a 26-yard field goal, extending the lead for Memphis to 16-10.

The defense for the Tigers was at it again in the final frame, as Frank Trotter scooped up a loose ball and scampered towards the end zone for an 18-yard score. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving Memphis with only 22-10 advantage.

The Herd began their comeback just seconds after that touchdown, as Martinez broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run.

That was followed by Van's 19-yard touchdown run, which put the Herd on top 23-22. Marshall attempted a two-point conversion, but it was unsuccessful. However, Marshall's defense clamped down the rest of the way, securing the one- point victory.
