Final Score: Arkansas State 47, Memphis 3
Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - Ryan Aplin threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns as the Arkansas State Red Wolves crushed the Memphis Tigers, 47-3, in non-conference action at ASU Stadium.
Aplin connected on all but two of his 21 pass attempts for the Red Wolves (1-1) as they snapped a four-game slide dating back to last season. Backup quarterback Andre Smith hit on 10-of-12 passes for another 101 yards and a score as well. Josh Jarobe caught seven balls for 162 yards and a pair of TDs. Frankie Jackson logged a team-high 101 yards and a score on just 10 carries as well.
The Tigers (0-2), losers of 11 straight overall and 13 in a row on the road, were led by true freshman quarterback Taylor Reed who converted just 13-of-29 passes for a mere 87 yards and suffered five sacks in his first collegiate start.
ASU ran out to a 23-0 lead to kick off the meeting as kicker Brian Davis started the action with a 31-yard field goal early in the first frame. Aplin combined with Jarobe on scoring passes of 10 and 71 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively, while Jermaine Robertson made his way into the end zone on an eight-yard run.
The only points of the game for Memphis came on a 37-yard field goal by Paulo Henriques at the 3:57 mark of the second period, making the score 23-3.
Before the half could end, the Red Wolves put together another scoring drive, this one extending 90 yards on 11 plays and culminating with an 18-yard TD pass from Aplin to Dwayne Frampton, raising the lead to 30-3 at the break.
In the third stanza ASU continued to pour it on, adding an 11-yard touchdown run by Jackson, an 11-yard TD pass from Smith to Derek Lawson and a 56-yard field goal from Bobby Zalud to provide the hosts with a resounding 44-point triumph.
Alabama transfer Keiwone Malone, who was ruled eligible for competition by the NCAA on Friday, caught his first career pass of two yards from Reed in the third quarter for a Tigers squad which ended up with a mere 169 yards of total offense.
