Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Case Keenum threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Houston Cougars in a 56-3 rout of the East Carolina Pirates in a Conference USA bout at Robertson Stadium.
Patrick Edwards hauled in 12 passes for 133 yards to go with a pair of touchdowns in the win for Houston (6-0, 2-0 C-USA), which has started the season 6-0 for the first time since the 1990 campaign. Tyron Carrier added seven receptions for 53 yards and a score as well for the Cougars, while Charles Sims gained 84 yards with two touchdowns on the ground as well.
Dominique Davis and Rio Johnson both saw time under center for East Carolina (1-4, 1-1), but neither had much success when taking the snaps. Davis completed 13-of-23 for 169 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions, while Johnson completed 13 passes for just 94 yards and one pick. Torrance Hunt ran for 65 yards in the loss, while Lance Lewis caught five balls for 73 yards.
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the opening period of play following a one-yard Bryce Beall plunge, and added a three-yard scoring connection between Edwards and Keenum just over two minutes later.
The Pirates responded with a 54-yard Michael Barbour field goal late in the stanza.
From there, it was all Houston, as the Cougars rattled off 42 unanswered points, beginning with a five-yard run from Sims early in the second quarter.
Sims found the end zone again midway through the frame following a four-yard scamper, while Keenum found Edwards once more late in the stanza with an eight-yard strike to give the Cougars a 35-3 halftime cushion.
A 19-yard scoring run from Michael Hayes early in the third quarter extended the Cougars advantage to 42-3, while a 27-yard completion from Keenum to Carrier early in the final stanza pushed the lead to 49-3.
The Cougars added an eight-yard run for a score by Cotton Turner with under two minutes remaining, accounting for the final score of the meeting.
Tonight's performance earned Keenum second-place on the NCAA all-time passing yards list with 15,895 yards.
