Akron, OH (Sports Network) - The FIU Golden Panthers rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 27-17 decision over the Akron Zips in a non- conference bout at InfoCision Stadium.
Darriet Perry scored two of those touchdowns for FIU (4-2) and finished with 85 yards on 20 carries. However, it was Kedrick Rhodes who led the way on the ground for FIU, as he finished with 126 yards and one touchdown on 5.7 yards per tote. Wes Carroll threw for 308 yards in the matchup, but he did not toss a touchdown and was intercepted once.
As for the Zips (1-5), they were led by quarterback Clayton Moore. Moore only completed 50 percent of his passes for 157 yards and was intercepted once, but the signal caller did lead the way on the ground for Akron, rumbling for 58 yards and one score. Jawon Chisholm added 43 rushing yards and also found the end zone once.
The Golden Panthers struck first, as Jack Griffin nailed a 37-yard kick midway through the opening quarter.
Akron responded on its next possession, as Chisholm plunged into the end zone for a one yard score, capping off a seven-play, 76-yard drive.
The Zips pushed their lead to 10-3 early in the second stanza when A.J. Fox drilled a 40-yard kick.
FIU was able to tie the game later in the quarter, thanks to a two-yard touchdown dash by Perry.
A 21-yard field by Griffin in the final seconds of the first half gave the Golden Panthers a 13-10 lead as the two teams entered the break.
The Golden Panthers extended their lead to 20-10 midway through the third quarter when Rhodes plunged in the end zone on a one yard run.
Akron responded later in the frame when Moore escaped the backfield and rolled into the end zone on a 15-yard scamper.
FIU went back up by 10 though, as Perry rumbled into the end zone for a three- yard score.
That would be the last score of the matchup, as FIU's defense shut the door on Akron's offense the rest of the way.
