Final Score: Syracuse 33, Toledo 30 (OT)
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - The Syracuse Orange were able to move to 3-1 on the young season with Saturday afternoon's hard-fought 33-30 overtime victory against Toledo at the Carrier Dome.
Sophomore placekicker Ross Krautman was a perfect 4-of-4 on field goals, including a 27-yarder in the first overtime to give the Orange the win.
It marked Syracuse's 12th overtime game in school history and second this season, opening the year with an overtime win against Wake Forest.
Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib connected on 16-of-24 passes, for 213 yards and two TDs, while tailback Antwon Bailey finished with 114 yards and one TD on 28 carries.
Toledo, which managed 438 yards of total offense, was led by quarterback Austin Dantin, who completed 22-of-32 passes, for 258 yards, with one TD and one INT. Wideout Eric Page, who is one of the nation's leaders in total yards, hauled in 13 balls, for 158 yards to lead all Toledo receivers.
The Rockets owned the first quarter, as Ryan Casano got the scoring going, capping off an impressive 22-play, 75-yard drive that ate up most of the first quarter (10:34), with a 20-yard field goal.
Toledo would make it 10-0 with just over a minute left in the first quarter thanks to a 21-yard TD run by tailback Morgan Williams.
The hometown Orange turned the tables in the second quarter, getting on the scoreboard one minute in with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Nassib to Nick Provo. A pair of Krautman field goals followed, 33 and 31 yards, respectively, giving Syracuse a 13-10 lead.
To Toledo's credit, the Rockets moved the ball 34 yards in just over a minute, capping off the nine-play drive with a 52-yard field goal by Jeremiah Detmer to tie things up at 13-13 as time expired in the first half.
The Rockets took the lead once again in the third quarter, as Dantin threw a 29-yard TD pass to David Fluellen with just under five minutes to play in the stanza.
The lead was short-lived however, as Syracuse would tie things up at 20-20 with a four-play, 58-yard drive that took just 1:20 off the clock, capped off by a 20-yard TD run by Bailey.
The Orange took the lead once again early in the fourth quarter thanks to a 29-yard field goal by Krautman.
Toledo would go ahead for the third time in the game with just over 10 minutes left in the game thanks to a three-yard TD run by Williams, making the score 27-23.
Syracuse would counter thanks to an 18-yard TD pass from Nassib to Alec Lemon just over two minutes remaining.
Toledo would answer with a 20-yard field goal by Casano as time expired in regulation, forcing the extra session.
The Rockets would get the ball first in overtime, but Syracuse cornerback Kevyn Scott made an interception in the end zone on the first play. The Orange then positioned themselves for Krautman, who was able to convert his fourth field goal of the game to give the Orange the win.
Long after the game's conclusion, the Big East Conference issued a statement regarding an officiating error that took place late in the contest that could have easily changed the outcome.
"After studying the videos of the Syracuse extra-point attempt at 2:07 of the fourth quarter, we have concluded that the ruling on the field that the kick passed between the uprights was incorrect, and that the replay official made an error in failing to reverse that ruling," said coordinator of football officiating Terry McAulay. "In reviewing the video, we have determined that the angle from behind the kicking team shows conclusively that the ball passes outside the right upright."
"Our review of the process determined that the replay official mistakenly focused his attention on the sideline angle, which proved to be distorted. We are confident that our officiating staff will learn from this situation in order to prevent a reoccurrence."
