(Saturday, September 10th)

Final Score: Wake Forest 34, NC State 27

Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - The Wake Forest Demon Deacons found themselves in the win column for the first time this season, as they outlasted the NC State Wolfpack 34-27 in the ACC-opener for both squads.

The Demon Deacons (1-1, 1-0 ACC) lost an overtime heartbreaker to Syracuse in the season-opener last weekend, but got a balanced offensive performance to keep the Wolfpack (1-1, 0-1) at bay and preserving the victory in Winston- Salem. The loss was the first for NC State this season, which opened the 2011 campaign with a 43-21 win over FCS foe Liberty.

Wake quarterback Tanner Price completed 22-of-35 passes, for 297 yards and one TD, while tailback Josh Harris rumbled for 96 yards and one score, as the Demon Deacons amassed 438 yards of total offense against the Wolfpack. The loss spoiled a strong performance by NC State quarterback Mike Glennon, who completed 24-of-41 passes for 315 yards and three TDs.

The Demon Deacons got off on the right foot, taking the opening kickoff 80 yards in nine plays, as Price hit Michael Campanaro with a 31-yard strike to give the hometown team a 7-0 lead.

Wake extended its lead to 10-0 with another long drive, this one a 14-play, 76-yard jaunt capped off by a 32-yard field goal by Jimmy Newman.

The two teams traded scores in the second quarter, although NC State's were field goals for 45 and 37 yards, while Wake scored a touchdown and field goal.

After being on the receiving end of a TD pass earlier in the game, Campanaro threw one of his own, hooking up with Danny Dembry on a 40-yard score.

Newman extended Wake's lead to 20-6 with a 37-yard field goal to close out the half.

The Demon Deacons capitalized on an early turnover to begin the second half, making it a 27-6 lead courtesy of a 15-yard TD run by Harris.

After the two teams traded punts, NC State finally showed some life with a 19- yard TD pass from Glennon to George Bryan.

Dembry landed in the end zone for the second time on the day, taking a reverse 10 yards to put Wake Forest up 34-13 with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

NC State countered with a one-play scoring drive to close out the stanza, as Glennon hit a streaking Tobias Palmer for a 65-yard TD to close the gap to 34-20.

It was once again a long TD pass from Glennon, this one going for 63 yards to wideout T.J. Graham, narrowing Wake's lead to 34-27 with just over five minutes to play in the game.

The Demon Deacons went four and out on their next possession, giving NC State one last chance, but the Wolfpack were unable to get in the end zone to force overtime, turning the ball over on downs with 1:46 to play.

A 21-yard run by Harris for Wake Forest put the final touches on an ACC- opening win for the hometown Demon Deacons, who have now won five straight at BB&T Field in the series with the Wolfpack.
