NCAA Game Summary - Virginia at North Carolina

(Saturday, September 17th)

Final Score: North Carolina 28, Virginia 17

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Bryn Renner threw two touchdown passes and Ryan Houston added two rushing scores, propelling the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 28-17 win over the Virginia Cavaliers in Atlantic Coast Conference action at Kenan Stadium.

Renner completed 15-of-21 passes for 143 yards and Giovani Bernard ran for 103 yards for the Tar Heels (3-0, 1-0 ACC), which rushed for 222 yards and won its ACC opener for the first time in 11 seasons.

Virginia (2-1, 0-1) was led by quarterback Michael Rocco, who finished 22- of-37 for 287 yards and one touchdown, adding another score on the ground as well.

After a scoreless first quarter, Virginia kicker Robert Randolph hit a 38-yard field goal to spot the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead on the first play of the second frame.

North Carolina responded with two touchdowns in the second period, the first coming on an 18-yard pass from Renner to Jheranie Boyd and the other a one- yard run by Houston to give the hosts a 14-3 edge at the break.

Renner struck again at the 13:02 mark of the third quarter, hitting Dwight Jones on a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-3.

Rocco pulled Virginia within 11 on the next drive, finding Max Milien with a 41-yard scoring strike. That was as close as the Cavaliers would get, however, as Houston capped a six-play, 88-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter.

The Tar Heels picked off Rocco twice in the fourth quarter to halt any serious comeback bid by Virginia, although the quarterback did cut into the lead with a four-yard TD run with 5:09 left to play.

UNC, which entered the game ranked third in the nation in run defense with just 30.0 ypg allowed, permitted 170 yards to the Cavaliers.
