Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Giovani Bernard rumbled for 81 yards and two touchdowns to lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 24-22 win over Rutgers in non-conference action at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
Bryn Renner completed 20-of-26 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown for UNC (2-0), although he also tossed three interceptions. Dwight Jones had a busy day, hauling in six passes for 135 yards and a score.
Chas Dodd threw for 243 yards and two TDs in a losing effort for Rutgers (1-1). Mohamed Sanu finished with 13 catches for 119 yards and a TD.
UNC scored on the fourth play from scrimmage, as Renner connected with Dwight Jones for a 66-yard scoring strike to give the Tar Heels an early 7-0 lead.
Rutgers cut the deficit to 7-6 on a pair of field goals (35, 50 yards) from San San Te in the second quarter.
The Tar Heels pushed their advantage to 14-6 at the 8:40 mark of the second quarter, when Bernard broke free for a 60-yard touchdown burst.
Rutgers answered with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dodd to Sanu with just 19 seconds to play in the first half. However, the Scarlet Knights could not convert the two-point attempt and still trailed, 14-12.
UNC's T.J. Thorpe returned the ensuing kickoff to the Rutgers' 35, setting up a 46-yard field goal by Casey Barth just before halftime to make it a 17-12 game.
Te opened the scoring in the second half with a 19-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to cut the margin to 17-15.
However, UNC's Bernard found the end zone again, this time from six yards out to make it a 24-15 game with 1:12 to play in the third quarter.
Rutgers trimmed the deficit to 24-22 at the 10:40 mark of the fourth quarter, as Dodd connected with Tim Wright for a five-yard scoring strike. However, the Scarlet Knights could not draw any closer.
Rutgers simply could not get the ground game going, as UNC limited the Scarlet Knights to one rushing yard for the game.
