Final Score: North Carolina 37, Duke 21
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Dwight Jones had 10 catches for 101 yards and three touchdowns, as the North Carolina Tar Heels notched their eighth consecutive win over ACC rival Duke to once again claim the Victory Bell.
With his 10 catches, Jones set a UNC single-season record for receptions, while Giovani Bernard had a season-high 30 carries and finished with 222 total yards for the Tar Heels (7-5, 3-5 ACC). Bryn Renner threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns, tying the school's single-season record for TD passes.
The Blue Devils (3-9, 1-7) were not able to overcome four turnovers as they suffered their seventh straight loss. Quarterback Sean Renfree accounted for two of those turnovers and was replaced by backup Anthony Boone for the majority of the second half.
Renner gave North Carolina a 7-0 lead with a six-yard scoring strike to Jones midway through the first quarter.
But Duke answered with a long touchdown on its very next play from scrimmage, as Renfree connected with Juwan Thompson down the sideline for a 70-yard scoring strike.
UNC kicker Thomas Moore gave the Tar Heels a 13-7 lead with a 31-yard field goal late in the first quarter and a 46-yarder at the 14:55 mark of the second period.
Less than three minutes later, Bernard made it a 20-7 game when he burst up the middle for a 48-yard touchdown scamper.
However, Duke was able to respond with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Renfree to Jamison Crowder with 1:22 to play until halftime.
UNC added to its lead with a 28-yard field goal from Moore midway through the third quarter.
The Blue Devils cut the deficit to 23-21 on Boone's 11-yard scoring strike to Donovan Varner with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. However, that was as close as they would come as Jones sealed the outcome with two more TD grabs down the stretch.
His second touchdown of the day came on an 18-yard pass at the 1:58 mark of the third quarter, and his third was on an eight-yard pass midway through the fourth to put the Tar Heels on top by 16.
North Carolina posted 508 total yards and held a 13-minute edge in time of possession, as the Blue Devils defense showed signs of fatigue late in the game.
