Ames, IA (Sports Network) - James White scored on a four-yard run in triple- overtime to send the Iowa State Cyclones to a thrilling 44-41 win over Iowa in the latest installment of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series at Jack Trice Stadium.
Steele Jantz threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns for the Cyclones (2-0), who were coming off a last-minute win over Northern Iowa in their season opener. Shontrelle Johnson paced the ground game with 108 yards on 18 carries, while Darius Reynolds headlined the receiving corps with 85 yards and two touchdowns on six catches.
Marcus Coker ran for 140 yards and two TDs for the Hawkeyes (1-1), who had won each of the last three meetings with Iowa State. James Vandenberg threw for 207 yards and two scores in the loss.
Vandenberg got Iowa on the board first with a six-yard touchdown pass to Kevonte Martin-Manley at the 5:20 mark of the opening quarter, capping a 12- play, 82-yard drive.
The Hawkeyes expanded their lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter on a 42- yard field goal by Mike Meyer.
Iowa State scored its first points thanks to an Iowa fumble deep in Hawkeye territory. Taking over from the Iowa 12-yard line, Steele Jantz found Darius Reynolds for an 11-yard scoring strike with 7:40 remaining in the second quarter.
The Cyclones evened the score at 10-10 with 41 seconds to play until halftime, as Grant Mahoney booted a 54-yard field goal.
Iowa tacked on six points in the third quarter on two more field goals by Meyer (20, 50 yards).
However, the Cyclones recaptured the lead with 2:02 to play in the third quarter, as Jantz tossed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Josh Lenz.
The seesaw battle continued in the fourth quarter, as Iowa's Coker reached pay dirt on a one-yard run with 5:50 remaining. Vandenberg connected with Keenan Davis for the two-point conversion to make it a 24-17 game.
However, Iowa State drove 59 yards in 13 plays to set up a four-yard touchdown pass from Jantz to Darius Darks, tying the score at 24-24 with 1:17 to play.
The teams went to overtime and traded touchdowns in the first extra session. In the second overtime, Iowa State scored first on a one-yard run by White. Iowa evened it up on a 23-yard pass from Vandenberg to Davis on 3rd-and-8.
Iowa had first possession in the third OT and had to settle for a field goal. The Cyclones took the ball and drove down to the four-yard line, setting up White's game-winning scamper.
