Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Riley Nelson threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns as the BYU Cougars downed the Oregon State Beavers, 38-28, in a non-conference game at Reser Stadium.
Nelson was 17-of-27 through the air as the Cougars (5-2) won their fourth straight. He also picked up a game-high 87 rushing yards. Cody Hoffman caught nine passes for 162 yards.
Sean Mannion was 27-of-43 through the air for 306 yards and a touchdown for the Beavers (1-5). Markus Wheaton caught eight balls for 104 yards.
The Cougars took a 7-0 lead when Michael Alisa ran 10 yards for a score with five minutes left in the first quarter. J.J. Di Luigi's three-yard TD run made it 14-0 with 9:23 left until halftime.
The hosts got on the board when Mannion ran into the end zone from a yard out with just under four minutes left until the break. It became a 14-14 game when Jordan Poyer took an interception 51 yards for another OSU touchdown with just over a minute left in the half.
BYU moved back in front when Nelson hit Hoffman with a 12-yard touchdown pass four minutes into the third quarter. Justin Sorenson's 33-yard field goal with three-and-a-half minutes left in the period gave the Cougars a 24-14 advantage.
Mannion responded for the Beavers a minute-and-a-half later when he threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks to cut the BYU lead to 24-21.
Nelson hit J.D. Falslev with a two-yard touchdown pass five minutes into the fourth quarter, then connected with Kaneakua Friel on an eight-yard throw with just under four minutes remaining,
Jovan Stevenson's two-yard TD run for the hosts in the closing seconds made the final score a bit closer, but still Oregon State was saddled with the double-digit setback.
The Cougars came out on top despite being flagged for 10 penalties for 79 yards. They were 11-of-14 on third-down conversions.
