Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Keith Price continued his impressive season with a 292 passing yard and three touchdown showcase, leading the Washington Huskies past the California Golden Bears, 31-23, at Husky Stadium.
Chris Polk lead the Huskies (3-1, 1-0 Pac12) in rushing with 60 yards and receiving with 85 yards. Polk also found the end zone both on the ground and through the air.
California's Zach Maynard completed 23 of 43 attempts for 349 yards and a touchdown. Kennan Allen had his best performance of the season with 10 receptions for 197 yards and a touchdown. Isi Sofele also contributed 98 yards on 17 attempts for the Golden Bears (3-1, 0-1).
The first score of the game put California up 7-0 as Maynard completed a pass to Allen for 90 yards.
Washington would answer on their following possession. Austin Seferian-Jenkins caught a 20 yard pass from Price for a touchdown on just the third play of the drive.
After forcing a quick California three and out, the Huskies offense struck again. This time Polk punched it in from two yards out to give the home team a 14-7 lead with a few minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Cal chipped away at the lead at the start the second quarter as kicker Giorgio Tavecchio connected from 29 yards out to make it 14-10.
The Washington offense continued their early success in the second stanza. Price found Seferian-Jenkins for a second 20 yard touchdown pass to extend the Huskies lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.
After a Golden Bears' drive stalled inside the 20, Tavecchio made his second field goal of the quarter, this time from 36 yards out to make it 21-13
A fumble by Price gave the Golden Bears a short field on their next possession. Maynard took advantage of his rival quarterback's mistake by pushing the Washington defense to their goal line before C.J. Anderson punched it in from a yard out. The Anderson score reduced the Washington lead to one point as the game went into halftime with a 21-20 score.
California regained the lead on their opening drive of the second half courtesy of another Tavecchio field goal. The senior kicker's third field goal of the game made it 23-21.
After a Kevin Smith return gave the Huskies the ball in Cal territory, the Washington offense put kicker Erik Folk in position to make a 40 yard kick. The lead changing field goal put Washington up 24-23 with just over two minutes remaining in the third frame.
Washington added to its lead early in the fourth when Price threw a pass to Polk that resulted in a 70 yard touchdown to give the Huskies a 31-23 lead.
California was able to orchestrate a decent drive and found themselves at the Washington goal line with just thirty seconds remaining. The Huskies' defense survived the Golden Bears' late effort and hung on for a victory as they forced a turnover on downs after a Maynard pass fell incomplete.
This matchup was the 91st meeting between the two schools. Washington now leads the all time series between the teams 49-38-4.
