Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Zach Maynard completed 19-of-26 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown to lead the California Golden Bears to a 47-38 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils at Sun Devil Stadium.
C.J. Anderson had 122 total yards of offense and three touchdowns for California (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) as it denied its opponent any chance at a conference championship. Isi Sofele was sensational in the contest as he rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.
Brett Osweiler led Arizona State (6-6, 4-5) by completed 21-of-37 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Osweiler did see his share of trouble as he was intercepted twice. Despite the loss, Cameron Marshall ran all over the Golden Bears as he rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Rashad Ross was able to find holes in the secondary for the Sun Devils as he caught five passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.
California opened up the scoring at the 12:26 mark as Giorgio Tavecchio connected on a 48-yard field goal attempt.
The Sun Devils scored their first points at the 7:50 mark of the opening period as Marshall plunged into the end zone on a one-yard run, giving ASU a 7-3 edge.
Cal answered just under two minutes later as Sofele scampered 18 yards for a score. After fumble on the ensuing play from scrimmage, the Golden Bears found themselves with a short field. After a pass interference call, Maynard broke the pocket and rumbled 16 yards for a touchdown to make it 17-7.
Arizona State narrowed the margin seconds into the second period when Osweiler completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Pflugrad.
With just under five minutes remaining, Anderson rushed one yard for a touchdown to extend the Golden Bears lead. Then with just under three minutes remaining, Tavecchio made a 27-yard field goal that put Cal up 27-21.
The Sun Devils answered back with just over a minute left in the half when Osweiler connected with Ross for a 35-yard touchdown pass that put Arizona State down six.
California fumbled on the ensuing kickoff which returned the ball back to the Sun Devils at the 30 yard line. Three plays later Osweiler connected with Trevor Kohl a four yard touchdown pass with just 33 seconds left in the half. Osweiler's third touchdown pass of the half gave the Sun Devils a 28-27 lead heading into the break.
Arizona State opened up scoring in the second half as Alex Garoutte booted in a 47-yard field goal to put his team up 31-27 less than three minutes into the third quarter.
The Golden Bears took the lead back with 9:02 left in the third frame when Anderson rushed three yards for a score. With just under three minutes left in the period, Maynard completed a 74-yard touchdown pass to Anderson to give Cal a 41-31 lead.
Arizona State scored with seconds left in the third quarter as Marshall rushed 24 yards for a touchdown that shrunk Cal's lead to 41-38 heading into the final quarter of play.
Tavecchio kicked in field goals from 19 and 30 yards, respectively, to extend the Golden Bears' lead to 47-38 and put the game out of reach.
The game was loaded with offense on both sides. California and Arizona State combined for 961 yards of total offense.
