Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Tommy Rees was 30-of-38 through the air for 296 yards and two touchdowns as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish rolled over the Maryland Terrapins, 45-21, in a non-conference game at FedEx Field.
Jonas Gray rushed for a career-high 136 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns as Notre Dame (7-3) won for the seventh time in its last eight games. Cierre Wood picked up 99 rushing yards for the Fighting Irish on 18 carries. Michael Floyd caught nine balls for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Danny O'Brien converted 14-of-21 passes for the Terrapins (2-8) who lost their sixth straight. O'Brien was forced out of the game in the third quarter by an injury. Quintin McCree caught five passes for 76 yards and a score, while D.J. Adams picked up 55 rushing yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown.
Notre Dame took a 7-0 lead when Gray scored from a yard out with 11:25 left in the opening period. David Ruffer added a 52-yard field goal for the Irish at the 2:47 mark. Rees's 19-yard pass to Floyd gave Notre Dame a 17-0 advantage with 8:29 left in the first half.
Maryland got on the board when O'Brien hit McCree on a 13-yard scoring connection with 5:18 to go until halftime.
Gray scored his second touchdown of the game from a yard out to extend Notre Dame's lead to 24-7 with 29 seconds left in the half.
A three-yard TD run by Wood pushed the Notre Dame lead to 31-7 before his teammate Lo Wood picked off an O'Brien pass and returned it 57 yards for a score with 7:18 left in the third.
C.J. Brown, Maryland's backup quarterback, scrambled 24 yards for a score with 14:02 to play in the game.
Rees found Tyler Eifert on a 31-yard touchdown connection with 5:31 left before Adams scored from two yards out for the Terps with under four minutes to play.
Notre Dame generated 508 yards in total offense. The Fighting Irish enjoyed a nine-minute advantage in time of possession.
