NCAA Game Summary - Notre Dame at Wake Forest

Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - The Notre Dame Fighting Irish rushed for 175 yards and held Wake Forest scoreless in the second half, earning a hard- fought 24-17 victory at Groves Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

With the win, Notre Dame (6-3) became bowl eligible, as the team has now won two games in a row and six of its last seven, overcoming an 0-2 start to the year. The Irish got 92 yards and one TD from tailback Jonas Gray, while his backfield partner, Cierre Wood added 87 yards on the ground. Quarterback Tommy Rees wasn't particularly effective, completing just 14-of-23 passes, for 166 yards. He did throw two TD passes, but was also responsible for a pair of interceptions.

Wake Forest (5-4) failed in its bid to become bowl eligible for the second straight week. The Demon Deacons were held to just 297 yards of total offense, including 110 on the ground. Quarterback Tanner Price completed 17-of-24 pass attempts, for 187 yards and a TD in the loss.

The Demon Deacons got off to a fast start, scoring on the opening drive, as Price hit tailback Brandon Pendergrass on a 20-yard TD strike.

Notre Dame made it 7-3 in the first quarter with a 44-yard field goal by David Ruffer.

Wake's Jimmy Newman countered with a 46-yard field goal just over two minutes later, but Rees found tight end Tyler Eifert for a 38-yard TD pass just 29 seconds after that to tie the game at 10-10.

Wake Forest took the lead again at the end of the second quarter thanks to a two-yard TD run by Josh Harris, giving the hometown team a 17-10 lead at the intermission.

The Irish scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, tying the score with a one-yard TD run by Gray at the 12:54 mark of the third stanza. That was followed by the decisive score, a 16-yard TD pass from Rees to wideout Michael Floyd.

The score remained 24-7 following a scoreless fourth quarter.
