Provo, UT (Sports Network) - J.J. Di Luigi ran for 134 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries as the BYU Cougars upended the San Diego State Aztecs, 24-21, in a Mountain West Conference battle at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Bryan Kariya reached the endzone two times while gaining 85 yards on 22 carries of his own for BYU (2-4, 1-1 MWC), which snapped a four-game slide. Jake Heaps completed 15-of-22 pass attempts for 126 yards and one interception.
San Diego State (3-2, 0-1 MWC) was led by Ryan Lindley, who threw for 220 yards, three touchdowns and one pick. Vincent Brown had six receptions for 101 yards and one score in the loss.
BYU opened the scoring with a three-yard rushing touchdown by Di Luigi late in the first quarter. Kariya followed that up with a touchdown run of his own, punching the ball in from two yards out to give BYU a 14-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
San Diego State found itself on the board after Lindley connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brown for the lone score of the second quarter.
The Cougars received a 29-yard field goal from Mitch Payne midway through the third quarter to extend their lead to 17-7.
Later in the quarter, Lindley found Gavin Escobar for a one-yard touchdown strike to bring the Aztecs' deficit to 17-14.
Kariya marched for his second score on the night from one-yard out early in the final quarter to hand BYU a 24-14 advantage.
San Diego State would score one more time on a four-yard touchdown pass from Lindley to Brandon Sullivan, but it wasn't quite enough, as the Aztecs ultimately fell to BYU, 24-21.
