Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Derrvin Speight ran for 114 yards and scored a touchdown as host Utah State downed New Mexico State, 27-22, in a Western Athletic Conference "battle of the Aggies" at Ramsey Stadium.
Diondre Borel was 11-of-22 through the air for 110 yards for Utah State (3-6, 1-4), and the quarterback also ran for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Matt Christian was 17-of-34 through the air for 191 yards for New Mexico State (2-7, 1-4 WAC), which has lost three of its last four. Kenny Turner caught seven passes for 64 yards and carried 17 times on the ground for 68 additional yards.
New Mexico State opened the scoring when Matt Christian ran nine yards for a touchdown at the 9:33 mark of the opening period.
Christian hit Todd Lee on a 32-yard touchdown throw to give his team a 14-0 lead with :52 remaining in the quarter.
Utah State picked up its first points as time expired in that first quarter, as Speight scored on a two-yard run.
Tyler Stampler extended New Mexico State's lead to 17-7 on a 46-yard field goal with exactly 10 minutes left in the first half.
Peter Caldwell booted a 44-yarder of his own at the 7:41 mark of the second quarter to cut New Mexico State's lead to 17-10.
Utah State tied the game with 2:50 left in the third quarter when Borel scored from three yards out.
New Mexico State moved back in front when Stampler kicked a 48-yard field goal with 9:29 left in the game.
Utah State struck back after a long kickoff return and a penalty against New Mexico State gave the hosts the ball in the red zone. Eric Moats scored on a 10-yard run to give Utah State a 24-20 lead with 9:07 left in the game.
Peter Caldwell extended the host's lead with a 24-yard field goal with 2:44 left, and Utah State took an intentional safety as time expired to preserve the win.
New Mexico State lost the game despite a 8:26 advantage in time of possession.
