Reno, NV (Sports Network) - Colin Kaepernick threw for 190 yards and ran for 102 more, as the Nevada Wolf Pack defeated the Utah State Aggies, 56-42, in Western Athletic Conference action at Mackay Stadium.
Kaepernick passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, as Nevada (7-1, 2-1 WAC) improved to 5-0 at home. Courtney Randall added 93 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries for the Wolf Pack, who racked up 387 yards and six scores on the ground.
Utah State (2-6, 0-4) was led by Diondre Borel, who threw for 399 yards and a pair of scores. He also had a rushing touchdown. Kellen Bartlett grabbed five of his passes for 121 yards, while Dontel Watkins finished with six receptions for 82 yards and a score.
Nevada dominated the first half, scoring all 35 points to take control of the game. The Wolf Pack jumped out early when Mike Ball pulled in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kaepernick. Nevada extended its lead later in the opening quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run by Tyler Lantrip.
Mark Lampford scored on a five-yard run early in the second frame before Kaepernick scampered 59 yards to paydirt late in the quarter. With just over a minute left before the break, Ball went in from five yards out.
The Aggies finally got on the board early in the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Borel to Tarren Lloyd.
Nevada responded two minutes later with a 35-yard touchdown run from Ball.
Borel then plunged one yard across the goal line for Utah State before Nevada's Nick Hale snared 20-yard touchdown pass from Kaepernick.
With six seconds left in the third quarter, Robert Marshall ran three yards for a score to make it a 49-21 game.
Utah State chipped away further with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Borel to Watkins early in the fourth frame. With just over two minutes left, the Aggies pulled within 14 points behind a seven-yard touchdown run by Kerwynn Williams.
Nevada, though, sealed the deal with a Courtney Randall one-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left.
Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a score, but it wasn't enough for Utah State.
