Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Austin Davis ran for three scores and threw for another as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles cruised to a 41-16 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Conference USA tilt.
Desmond Johnson ran for 73 yards on 13 carries for Southern Miss (4-1, 1-0 C- USA).
Brian Anderson threw a touchdown pass in defeat for Marshall (1-4, 0-1).
The Golden Eagles dominated the first quarter, as a 19-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Quentin Pierce and a six-yard Davis scoring scamper enabled the squad to grab a 14-0 lead.
Davis scored on runs of seven yards and one yard in the second quarter, and Southern Miss owned a commanding 28-0 advantage at intermission.
Danny Hrapmann nailed a 51-yard field goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter, pushing the Golden Eagles' lead to 31-0.
Marshall finally got on the board on the ensuing kickoff, as Troy Evans raced 100 yards to cut the huge deficit to 31-7.
With just over four minutes left in that third frame, Hrapmann made the score 34-7 with a 24-yard field goal.
Marshall scored a safety early in the fourth quarter and got a six-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Aaron Dobson with 5:45 remaining, making the score 34-16.
The final points of the game came on a 13-yard touchdown run by Kendrick Hardy of Southern Miss, bringing the score to its final of 41-16.
