Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Dominique Davis threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, as the East Carolina Pirates rallied past the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, 44-43, in a Conference USA bout at Roberts Stadium.
Davis hit on 18-of-36 pass attempts, but was also picked three times for the Pirates (3-2, 3-0 C-USA), who overcame a 20-point first-half deficit to snap a two-game slide. Dwayne Harris hauled in nine balls for 99 yards and a score, while Lance Lewis had a pair of touchdown catches.
Austin Davis headed the charge for USM (4-2, 1-1), throwing for 237 yards and a score on 20-of-39 pass attempts. He added a touchdown on the ground, as the Eagles saw their four-game win streak come to an end. Danny Hrapmann kicked a school-record five field goals, including two from 49 yards.
The Eagles jumped all over ECU in the opening quarter, scoring 20-unanswered points. V.J. Floyd got things started with a three-yard run before Hrapmann nailed a 49-yard field goal. Johdrick Morris then caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Davis before Hrapmann capped the scoring spree with a 39-yard field goal.
The Pirates, however, answered with a strong second quarter, scoring all 17 points of the frame. Lewis began the run with a 46-yard touchdown catch from Davis prior to Michael Barbour knocking through a 30-yard field goal. With 30 seconds left before the half, Harris pulled in a seven-yard scoring strike from Davis.
It took the Eagles just 23 seconds after the break to extend their lead to 27-17, as Davis scurried eight yards to paydirt.
ECU responded quickly with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Lewis.
Hrapmann then made good on a 49-yard field goal.
Jonathan Williams responded immediately and gave ECU its first lead, 31-30, after he returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a score. Giavanni Ruffin followed with a 13-yard touchdown run to extended the Pirate lead.
Hrapmann hit a pair of field goals, one late in the third and another midway through the fourth, to pull USM within two at 38-36.
The Eagles' defense then got involved, as Martez Smith returned an interception 32 yards for a score to give USM a 43-38 lead with 7:43 remaining.
ECU, though, showed its resiliency and regained the lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Michael Bowman with 4:36 remaining. The two-point conversion failed, but the Pirates were still able to hang on for the 44-43 victory.
