Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Austin Davis threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to an easy, 41-19 victory over the Memphis Tigers in Conference-USA action at Liberty Bowl Stadium.
Kelvin Bolden was the main target for Southern Mississippi (5-2, 2-1 C-USA), as the wide out finished with 154 yards and one score on eight receptions. Kendrick Hardy led the Golden Eagles on the ground with 101 rushing yards and one touchdown on just 11 carries. As a team, Southern Mississippi racked up 240 rushing yards on 5.0 yards per attempt.
Ryan Williams led Memphis (1-6, 0-4) with 237 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, while Marcus Rucker hauled in both scores, finishing the game with 155 yards on four catches.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 36-yard field goal by Danny Hrapmann.
Less than two minutes later the Tigers took over when Williams hit Rucker for a 22-yard scoring strike. However, Memphis did not connect on the extra point, leaving the score at 6-3.
Southern Mississippi went back on top just a few minutes later when Davis connected with Johdrick Morris for a six-yard touchdown pass.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 17-6 as time expired in the first quarter, when Davis found Desmond Johnson for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Johnson added a two-yard touchdown run midway through the second stanza to push Southern Mississippi's lead to 24-6.
Southern Mississippi and Memphis exchanged field goals in the third quarter, as Hrapmann nailed a 21-yard kick, while Memphis' Paulo Henriques connected on a 45-yard boot.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 34-9 early in the final stanza when Davis hit Bolden with a 28-yard touchdown pass.
Memphis found the end zone for the first time since the opening quarter, when Williams and Rucker hooked up again, this time for an 81-yard pass and catch.
Southern Mississippi continued to pour on the points however, as Hardy exploded for a 59-yard touchdown run.
Henriques connected on a 47-yard field goal for Memphis with just under six minutes left in regulation, but the Tigers were too far behind to play catch up and fell by a 22-point margin.
