Final Score: Southern Miss 31, (25) UCF 21
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Austin Davis threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns, as Southern Miss dumped 25th-ranked UCF, 31-21, in Conference-USA action at Bright House Network Stadium.
Davis connected on 21-of-34 passes, including two touchdowns to Kelvin Bolden for Southern Mississippi (7-3, 4-2 C-USA), which picked up a win at Tulane last weekend and has now won three of its last four.
Bolden finished with four catches for 75 yards and DeAndre Brown had three grabs for 66 yards and a score for the Golden Eagles, who have won four of their five games on the road this season. Johdrick Morris also caught a TD pass in the victory.
Jeff Godfrey completed 16-of-25 passes for 190 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and also ran for a score for UCF (7-3, 5-1), which had a five-game winning streak snapped. Ronnie Weaver rushed for 112 yards on 12 carries, while Jamar Newsome had five catches for 100 yards and a score.
"Obviously it's a disappointing game from the standpoint of productivity, on both sides of the ball," UCF head coach George O'Leary said. "I think offensively we had some passes dropped that had big play potential. You just can't give up field position like that, but overall we were not very productive offensively."
UCF found the end zone on its first two possessions to grab a quick 14-0 lead. On the initial drive, Weaver's 52-yard run put the Knights on the Southern Miss one-yard line and two plays later Godfrey powered his way in from there.
After the Golden Eagles failed on their ensuing touch, Danny Hrapmann's punt pinned UCF back at its own one-yard line, but the hosts responded with a nine- play, 99-yard drive. The Knights picked up three first downs before Weaver burst for a 38-yard run to the USM 10. Then on 3rd-and-goal from the four, Brian Watters took an option pitch from Godfrey on the right side and worked his way into the end zone.
Hrapmann's 31-yard field goal with 1:16 left in the first quarter got Southern Miss on the board. Godfrey was then intercepted by Alexander Walters on UCF's next possession and the visitors turned it into another score when Davis connected with Morris for a five-yard TD in the back of the end zone for a 14-10 game early in the second.
Southern Miss went in front for good with 3:36 to play in the half. Starting on its own 20, Davis hooked up with Brown for a 53-yard catch and run, then on the next play, the signal-caller found Bolden for a 23-yard TD to finish off a brief four-play, 80-yard drive. The Golden Eagles held the 17-14 edge at the break.
After an exchange of punts to start the third quarter, Southern Miss put another seven on the board, marching 65 yards in 10 plays. From the UCF 35, the Golden Eagles converted three third downs, the latter when Davis scrambled for a 15-yard gain, taking it to the 18. After an eight-yard run by Tracy Lampley, Davis connected with Brown, who out-jumped the defender for a 10-yard TD in the back of the end zone with 5:40 remaining in the third. The play was briefly reviewed and upheld.
Jamie Boyle failed to convert a 30-yard field goal for UCF in the early stages of the fourth quarter and Southern Miss turned it into another score when Davis hit Bolden on a 26-yard TD for a 31-14 game with 11:17 remaining.
Godfrey's 40-yard touchdown toss to Newsome with just under 4 1/2 minutes to play drew the Knights to within 10.
After a failed UCF onside kick, Southern Miss kept the ball on the ground and was able to run out the clock.
UCF will visit Tulane next Saturday, while Southern Miss hosts Houston...The Golden Eagles have won five of the six lifetime meetings against UCF...Morris caught five passes for 54 yards...Kendrick Hardy ran 15 times for 69 yards for Southern Miss.
