New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Wide receiver Quentin Pierce threw a 26- yard touchdown pass to Johdrick Morris with 12:35 left in the game to propel the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to a 46-30 win over the Tulane Green Wave in a Conference USA joust at the Louisiana Superdome.
Austin Davis was 18-of-35 through the air for Southern Mississippi (6-3, 3-2 C-USA) for 102 yards and one touchdown.
Ryan Griffin was 21-of-37 through the air for the Green Wave (3-6, 1-4) for 242 yards and two touchdowns. D.J. Banks caught seven balls for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Orleans Darkwa ran for 138 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. The Green Wave have lost four of their last five and four straight at home.
Danny Hraptman booted a 33-yard field goal with 9:47 left in the opening period and added a 49-yarder at the 8:03 mark to give the Golden Eagles an early 6-0 lead.
Tulane took a 7-6 lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter when Griffin found Banks with a 24-yard touchdown throw.
Southern Mississippi regained the lead when Kevin Hardy scored from a yard out with 2:11 left in the quarter.
Tulane regained the lead when Griffin hit Cody Sparks on an eight-yard scoring pass with 5:23 left in the second quarter.
Darkwa scored on a four-yard run with 1:11 left in the half to extend the Green Wave's advantage to 20-13.
Southern Mississippi tied the game at 20 when Davis hit Jonathan Massey on a two-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds left before halftime.
Darkwa scored his second touchdown of the game on a six-yard burst with 10:29 left in the third quarter to give Tulane a 27-20 lead.
Tracy Lampley raced 60 yards for the Golden Eagles to tie the game at the 9:59 mark.
Tulane took a 30-27 lead on Cairo Santos's 23-yard field goal with 5:57 left in the period.
Hrapmann booted his third field goal of the game, a 34-yarder, to tie the game at 30 with 1:51 left in the period. That set the stage for Pierce's option pass that put the Golden Eagles in front for good.
The Golden Eagles added a safety with 2:23 left when Griffin was sacked and fumbled into his own end zone. Southern Mississippi had a 39-30 lead after that play.
Alexander Walters put an exclamation point on the Southern Miss win when he recovered a Tulane fumble and took it 41 yards to the end zone with :21 left.
Tulane actually had the edge in total yardage, 402-358, but the Green Wave fumbled five times and lost two of them. They were just 3-of-12 on third-down conversions, while the Golden Eagles were 8-of-19.
