NCAA Game Summary - Texas-El Paso at Marshall

Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - Tron Martinez ran for a one-yard touchdown run with 1:47 remaining in the game to give the Marshall Thundering Herd a 16-12 victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners in a Conference USA showdown at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Martinez ran for 116 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries for Marshall (2-6, 1-6 C-USA), while quarterback Brian Anderson completed 13 of his 26 pass attempts for 138 yards and a score in the win.

UTEP (5-4, 2-4) was led by quarterback Trevor Vittatoe who threw for 229 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 22-of-40 passing. Kris Adams caught six receptions for 82 yards and a score in the loss.

Marshall opened the scoring as Anderson hooked up with Aaron Dobson for a four-yard touchdown strike as the Thundering Herd gained the only first quarter points and a 7-0 lead.

Kicker Dakota Warren connected on a 38-yard field goal for UTEP early in the second quarter, marking the only points produced by either team as the Miners went into the intermission trailing, 7-3.

Warren connected on the only points of the third quarter, splitting the uprights from 26 yards out as UTEP still trailed, 7-6.

The Miners took their first and only lead of the game when Vittatoe found Adams for a 23-yard touchdown and the 12-7 advantage. However, on the PAT attempt following the score, Marshall returned the failed kick all the way for a safety and two points, as the Herd now only trailed, 12-9.

With 1:50 remaining, Martinez punched in a one-yard touchdown run to ultimately give Marshall the 16-12 victory.
