NCAA Game Summary - Marshall at U-A-B

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Quarterback Brian Anderson threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-41 passing as the Marshall Thundering Herd ousted the UAB Blazers, 31-17, in a Conference USA showdown at Legion Field.

Lee Smith recorded receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns in the win for Marshall (3-6, 2-3 CUSA).

UAB (3-6, 2-3) was led by quarterback Bryan Ellis who completed 20 of his 44 passes for 235 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the defeat.

Marshall opened the scoring when Anderson hooked up with Smith for a four-yard touchdown pass, giving the Herd the early 7-0 advantage.

The Blazers knotted the game at 7-7 after Mike Jones caught an 11-yard strike from Ellis for the score.

Troy Evans caught a five-yard scoring pass from Anderson as Marshall jumped ahead, 14-7.

UAB tied the game at 14 apiece after Ellis found Patrick Hearn for a 43-yard touchdown.

The Herd took a 17-14 lead into the intermission after kicker Tyler Warner connected on a 41-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in the opening half.

After both teams failed to score in the third quarter, UAB received a 20-yard field goal from Josh Zaun and the game was once again tied, this time at 17-17.

That was the last points the Blazers managed to score as Marshall took a 24-17 advantage after Evans recovered a fumble in the end zone. Anderson later found Smith from eight yards out as the Herd finalized the 14-point victory.

UAB, which controlled the ball for less than 26 minutes on the day, converted just 6-of-18 on third down.
