Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - Ryan Aplin threw for 243 yards and one touchdown on 20-of-32 passing as the Arkansas State Red Wolves defeated the ULM Warhawks, 34-20, in a Sun Belt Conference clash at ASU Stadium.
Aplin also ran the ball 16 times for 75 yards and a touchdown in the win for Arkansas State (1-2, 1-1 Sun Belt), while Dwayne Frampton caught eight receptions good enough for 83 yards and one score.
ULM (0-2, 0-2 Sun Belt) was led by quarterback Kolton Browning who tossed for 267 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-32 passes, while also throwing two interceptions. Browning ran for a game-high 83 yards on 18 carries in the loss.
Aplin started the scoring with a four-yard touchdown scamper midway through the opening quarter as the Red Wolves jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
Derek Lawson followed suit with 12-yard rushing touchdown of his own as Arkansas State moved out to a 14-0 advantage as the first quarter expired.
The Red Wolves kept up the pressure in the second quarter as Aplin connected with Frampton for a 34-yard score and a commanding 21-0 lead.
ULM was able to stop the bleeding and make it a 21-7 game heading into halftime as Browning completed a touchdown pass to Brent Leonard for 33 yards.
Zach Rhodes brought the deficit to just seven as he ran for a four-yard touchdown for the Warhawks, who now trailed 21-14 early in the third quarter.
ASU eventually answered back as Phillip Butterfield rushed for a touchdown from one yard out as the Red Wolves took the 28-14 advantage into the final quarter. ASU was first two strike in the fourth quarter as kicker Bobby Zalud split the uprights from 37 yards out to give the Red Wolves a 31-14 lead.
The Warhawks added a score with 5:38 remaining in the game as Browning hooked up with Luther Ambrose for a 10-yard touchdown completion. But it wouldn't be enough as ASU added another field goal from Zalud, this time from 24 yards, as the Red Wolves captured the 14-point victory.
