Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Wes Carroll threw his lone touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to give the FIU Golden Panthers a thrilling, 31-24 come- from-behind victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves in a Sun Belt Conference clash at FIU Stadium.
Carroll completed 21-of-27 passes for 266 yards in the win for FIU (6-5, 6-1 SunBelt), which has claimed atleast a share of the Sun Belt title, while also becoming bowl eligible. T.Y. Hilton was the main target for Carroll, as the wide out hauled in 11 passes for 140 yards, and one score. Darian Mallary led the way with 83 yards on the ground, while Darriet Perry rumbled for 43 yards and two touchdowns.
Ryan Aplin only completed 8-of-19 passes for ASU (4-8, 4-4), and finished the game with 126 yards and two touchdowns.
The two teams exchanged field goals in the first quarter, as Jack Griffin connected on a 35-yard kick early in the frame for FIU, while Brian Davis followed with a 32-yard boot for ASU.
The Red Wolves took a 10-3 lead early in the second stanza when Aplin connected with Derek Lawson for a 12-yard touchdown pass.
FIU evened the score when Perry found the end zone on a five-yard run. Perry struck again with less than a minute remaining in the first half, as the tailback plunged into the end zone from the one-yard line, to give the Golden Panthers a 21-14 edge.
However, the Red Wolves closed the first half tied at 21 apiece, thanks to a 35-yard pass and catch between Aplin and Allen Muse in the final seconds of the second quarter.
The only points in the third quarter came off the foot of Griffin, who connected on a 23-yard kick late in the third frame.
The Red Wolves took the lead at 24-23 early in the final stanza when Dwayne Frampton connected with Phillip Butterfield for a four-yard touchdown pass.
A little over two minutes later Griffin drilled his third field goal of the contest, this kick coming from 30 yards out.
However, still trailing by a point, the Golden Panthers needed an 11-play, 80- yard drive, that resulted in a 42-yard touchdown pass from Carroll to Hilton to take the lead. FIU added a two-point conversion to go ahead by seven points, and that lead would stick, as the Golden Panthers completed the tough victory.
