Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Wesley Carroll threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns as he helped lead the FIU Panthers to a 34-10 win over the North Texas Mean Green in a Sun Belt Conference clash at Fouts Field.
Carroll converted 17-of-31 passes and shook off four sacks for the Panthers (2-4, 2-0 SBC) as they won their second straight outing after opening the 2010 campaign with four consecutive setbacks.
The Mean Green (1-6, 1-3) was paced by Chase Baine who converted 13-of-28 passes for 142 yards, but he too was taken down four times behind the line of scrimmage as his team lost for the third straight game.
FIU put the first points on the board, taking the opening possession 78 yards in just five plays, capped by a 50-yard TD pass from Carroll to Greg Ellingson.
UNT cut the deficit to 7-3 just 1:17 later when kicker Zach Olen knocked through a 38-yard effort, but Panthers kicker Jack Griffin was quick to respond with a 30-yard field goal of his own to make the score 10-3 midway through the first.
Towards the end of the opening frame Wayne Times added a 10-yard TD run for the Panthers, giving the visitors a 17-3 edge.
Carroll combined with T.Y. Hilton on a 43-yard TD play early in the second quarter and Griffin converted a 33-yard field goal to provide FIU with a substantial 27-3 advantage at the break.
The only scoring of the third frame came courtesy of a two-yard TD run by Kedrick Rhodes for the Panthers, while a Lance Dunbar nine-yard TD run in the fourth marked the one and only time the Mean Green was able to get into the end zone in the 24-point decision.
FIU rolled up 479 yards of total offense, converting 9-of-18 on third-down plays, compared to just 4-of-17 for North Texas on the night.
