Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Chandler Harnish completed 18-of-30 pass attempts for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and carried the ball 22 times for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead the Northern Illinois Huskies to a 28-21 win over the Western Michigan Broncos in Mid-American Conference play.
Chad Spann led the Huskies (7-2, 5-0 MAC) ground attack, toting the ball 22 times for 146 yards and a touchdown.
The Broncos (3-5, 2-2) were led by quarterback Alex Carder who completed 31- of-53 pass attempts for 360 yards and three scores. Jordan White was Carder's favorite target, hauling in 14 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown.
WMU scored on its first drive of the game when Carder hooked up with White for a 29-yard touchdown strike.
NIU responded early in the second quarter when Harnish powered his way into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown run. Michael Cklamovski missed the point after, however, so Western Michigan maintained a 7-6 lead.
The Broncos responded on the ensuing drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Carder to Juan Nunez.
The Huskies came right back to make it a 14-13 game at the half with a three- yard touchdown run by Spann.
NIU regained the lead on its opening drive of the second half with a nine- yard touchdown pass from Hardish to Nathan Palmer
WMU took a 21-20 lead late in the fourth quarter, with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Carder to Robert Arnheim.
The Huskies wasted little time in recapturing the lead, taking the ball 79 yards on their next drive, capped off by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Harnish to Willie Clark. The Huskies converted the two-point attempt with a pass from Harnish to Palmer to capture the 28-21 victory.
NIU was poised on offense, converting 10-of-15 third down opportunities and three-of-four red zone opportunities.
